Acupuncture works by stimulating the nervous system to trigger the release of the body’s natural pain-relieving and calming chemicals, including endorphins and enkephalins, as well as neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and GABA.
These neurochemical changes help reduce pain by decreasing pain signal transmission in the nervous system, relaxing tight muscles, and lowering inflammation. Acupuncture also influences stress hormones and helps regulate the autonomic nervous system, shifting the body out of “fight-or-flight” mode and into a restorative “rest-and-digest” state.
Rather than simply masking symptoms, acupuncture supports the body’s ability to modulate pain, regulate itself, and heal more effectively.

Acupuncture is generally not painful. The needles are very thin, about the width of two pieces of hair. Most people feel little to no discomfort, and many find treatments deeply relaxing. You may feel sensations during acupuncture such as tingling, pulsing or warmth.
